The sports business has become one of the fastest-growing industries in recent years. Sports organizations now have the potential to generate massive amounts of revenue through a variety of different channels, including broadcasting rights, advertising and branding. The far-reaching transformation of the world of sport has been driven by rapid commercialization, which has reached a point where it is quite legitimate to talk of a "sports business" or "sports industry".
Sports institutions and clubs today have much in common with large or medium-sized businesses. In effect, they have become companies, creating economic value and huge media impact, though with the specific characteristics of sports organizations, and so deserve to be studied on their own terms.
